Marlena Murtagh
I am an artist located in York County, PA living on a small farmhouse filled with chickens and a messy studio. Previously located in Baltimore City.
In addition to my own art making practice, I have the great privilege of teaching photography and graphic design at a local high school in Baltimore County. Watching my students learn the digital camera and discover the joy of taking that "perfect shot" is one of my true passions.
My current artistic practice is taking a deep dive into acrylic painting. I am interested in the intersection of photography and painting- focusing specifically on the way that sunlight moves through a room in my old farmhouse or the landscape out my window. I am also launching Chicken Scratch Print Club…and I can’t wait for you to receive mail from the farm!
I live with chronic, daily pain and my formal diagnoses are Chronic Migraine and Ankylosing Spondylitis. The chronic illness community is very close to my heart. If you look closely, you can see aspects of my chronic pain reflected in the work I create- from the moments of calm in my paintings to the layering of memory through nature in my photographs.
I welcome the opportunity to speak with you, so please reach out through phone or email to chat about art making.
